01. Introduction

DuelMania is an online QuakeWorld 1on1 deathmatch competition that uses a double elimination system. As the tournaments first goal is to provide fun and entertainment for all involved, and will not result in any substantial financial benefits for the winners, it may seem strange to have rules in the first place. However, whenever a competitive aspect is present, some rules will be necessary to make sure everyone can face eachother in a fair environment. Furthermore, the tournament system and its regulations provide for smoother handling of the competition and gives it the official nature that separates a tournament match from regular practice games.

01.Registration

DuelMania DownUnder is open for all Australian and New Zealand QuakeWorld players (and anyone willing to play on AU/NZ servers with high ping). Upon registration you will be given a username and password, this is for reporting matches and is unique for each player, so don't lose it or give it away. Players with multiple registration entries will be disqualified.

In the following you will find the tournament rules. The DuelMania admins are there to help you, so if you ever need our assistance or have any questions, you can find us #duelmania-downunder on the Cooked eSports discord. If in doubt: ASK!

02.Allowed clients

  • ezQuake (>= 3.0) with ruleset smackdown or quakecon
  • FodQuake (>= 0.2) with ruleset eql

Standard QWCL, mqwcl and FuhQuake are no longer valid for competition play. The allowed proxies are Qizmo 2.91 and QWfwd.

ezQuake 3.5 alpha will be allowed as long as it is an official build from 2019 (the last 2 builds). I suggest you use this build which is the latest version and it is known to be solid.

05.Cheating/Whining/Scripts

Disconnecting during a DuelMania match means that the map is lost. No unnecessary whining. Lame people will be treated lame, nice people will be treated nice. Any kind of idling or lameness will not be tolerated. Players who cheat, or try to cheat will get a permanent ban from DuelMania. Scripts are not allowed in DuelMania. Make sure to check that your opponent has them turned off (f_scripts) before starting to play.

06.Reporting matches

The winner of the game reports the match results as soon as possible using the 'Report Match' function on the DuelMania page. If the winner somehow can't provide a match report the other player will get permission to do it. Screenshots from the matches must also be uploaded and can be in any format. Players also have the ability to crop their screenshots if they are too big. Just check 'crop screenshots' when reporting and a new window pops up for each screenshot you wanna crop. No match reports will be registered before the match has been reported 100% correct. No exceptions!

08. Servers

Since most of the players will be from Australia or New Zealand it is pretty easy to figure out which servers to play on based on your geographic location. There are servers up in Adelaide, Auckland, Melbourne and Sydney.

In general the game can be played on any server both players agree to play on. The DuelMania Admins insist that the players' server choice is done with common sense and that pings are kept as low as possible.

However if the players don't agree, the server is determined by the following procedure:

  1. Servers where both players have <= 39ms are candidates. The server with the most even ping between the two players is the server of choice then.
  2. If no such server like described in 1) is available, both players have to show their lowest possible ping they can get on 1on1 servers. After that a server has to be found where both players get a ping which is about the same amount higher than their lowest possible ping. A ping difference of ~13ms is never considered to be too high.

Make sure you are using ezQuake best routes as per this guide: https://www.quakeworld.nu/blog/377/how-to-use-qwfwd-to-improve

If players still can't agree on a server, please contact admins about it. Admin decision is final.

08.Timeframe

All matches will have a deadline. If players can't organize themselves to get games played and reported by the end of the deadline, WO will be given to the player that proved admins that he really tried to make the game happen. Please report your activity to an admin before the deadline is over. If either player pays no interest at all to get the game played, both players loses, meaning both are out of the tournament. Deadlines for each stage of the tournament will be announced at the "Next Match" link in the User-Panel and will be advertised in #duelmania topic on QuakeNet. In order to guarantee some coverage of the bigger games, the schedules for the WB Finale, LB Finale and Grand Finale have to be arranged with an admin.

09.Tournament system

No snowflake divisions. Just one big bracket for everyone.

DuelMania uses a Double Elimination system. Depending on the number of signups we choose a bracket for 256, 128, 64, etc players. When there are only a few more players signed up than the bracket allows to have (for instance 20 players don't fit into the bracket), then we will have a qualifying round, where the players with the lowest seeding numbers play each other (in this example the last 40 players), so that everybody gets a chance to play.Below i use the abbreviation WB for winner's bracket and LB for loser's bracket.

The initial seeding into the WB is done manually by the admins. Here we seed as many players as we can, using a seeding-groups method. This means we seed players with almost the same skill level into one group and randomize the order within every group. The players we don't seed explicitly get a seed number in the order in which they signed up for DuelMania. So players who aren't seeded explicitly, but are quick at signups are awarded with a lower seeding number. The seeding number isn't shown to the players or public. The players only get to know if they are seeded higher than their opponent so that they can proceed with the map-choosing method explained earlier.

Players who loose their WB-game are knocked into the LB.They are seeded again into the LB according to their match-number in the WB, in order to prevent that a player has to play his WB-opponent who sent him to LB too near in the future.Players who loose their LB-game are out.
